Turnberry Board Members Get The Tides Turned On Them!

by guest blogger, Nila Ridings

Oh Florida! What are we going to do with you? Are you having a contest to see which HOA board can act the stupidest?

Eighty homeowners are now without their trash and recycling containers because the board at Turnberry Reserve hired people to steal them right off the homeowners property!

I won’t be surprised if homeowners don’t turn the board member’s yards, porches, trees, landscaping, and cars into their local landfill site. That could include dirty diapers on “Welcome” mats, used tampons hanging like tree ornaments, and smiley-faced partially-eaten peanut butter sandwiches turned upside down on Lexus IS-350 chrome bumpers.

Where is the health department going to stand on this stupidly insane stunt?

Will homeowners take a stand and sue those responsible for stealing their trash containers? From the attorney’s statements it sure sounds like this time the tides have turned and the board members are going to be the biggest losers!

The board members won the battle and lost the war!

Justice will be served!

Resurrection of the Third Reich?

Did that headline get your attention? Well, a Homeowners Association in Kissimmee, Florida sure got mine!

Turnberry Reserve Homeowners Association looks so peaceful when you see its entrance sign. But apparently, people inside this tyrannical regime are seething. In this HOA’s own newsletter they list a lengthy set of requirements on how and when trash is to be set out for the trash collectors.

But that’s not the half of it. Anyone whose trash cans remain visible after the deadline faces a novel punishment. The HOA bullies collect those trash cans and transport them to the county dump for destruction!

Seems that a number of homeowners have complained to WKMG TV-News in Orlando. Reporters interviewed those homeowners for a central Florida story.

Wait, it gets better. The same wench who wrote the community newsletter saying that board members were intentionally destroying trash cans of rule breakers has even more in that newsletter. She’s obviously intent on further humiliating these families by preparing to spread their names far and wide in her (now national) newsletter as well as by word-of-mouth.

As long as this monstrosity of an HOA has a national platform, here’s a suggestion to those homeowners being bashed. Now that you don’t have a trash can take advantage of it.

Remove all personal identification from your garbage and liberally spread all that refuse from one end of the neighborhood to the other.

And finally, since Turnberry Reserve posts its mailing address and phone number on the web, I’ll publish it here, as well.

Embezzlements, Galore!

Fascinating few days of embezzlement news. Two ‘ladies’ in Sevierville, Tennessee, were indicted for embezzling from the Shagbark Homeowners Association. It’s alleged they used the HOA credit card to run up tens of thousands of dollars which will now have to be paid by the homeowners. Their police mug shots make them look a little worried.

For the record: Alice K. Ball and Judy M. Hixon.

But the wilder news is from Ventura County, California. Two big HOA embezzlement suspects were arrested there.

Kristin Davis and Melissa Hoff ran the Paradigm Management Group. They were charged with a nearly one million dollar embezzlement from the Big Sky Homeowners Association. When they were caught and fired by an HOA, they allegedly changed the name of their company and did it all over again!

But wait. It gets better.

Turns out these two ladies managed fifty other Homeowners Associations all over Ventura County and Orange County… and many of them are also missing money. At this point, who knows how much dough is involved!

South Bend Sucker Punch

The developer always urges homeowners to be the first to buy into a brand new Homeowners Association. “If you delay, the price will only go up,” he’ll say. And sure enough, you throw your money down.

But new home buyers across the country are learning they’ve been victimized by one of the least prosecuted scams in America.

The latest one involves Lafayette Falls near South Bend, Indiana. Years have gone by. The developer is still collecting the dues, but homeowners are just now beginning to ‘get it’. The nice waterfall at the front entrance is now just green puddle with a broken pump. The streets are badly in need of repair.

On one street is a half finished home that hasn’t been touched for a year.
Neighborhood meetings are nasty affairs where the homeowners demand some kind of action be taken.

All the employees of Lafayette Falls? They’ve closed down the old office and they’re now working for another developer called ‘Turning Point’.

Will That Be Cash, Check, or Foreclosure?

$70,000 to $90,000 per condo owner is what’s needed to repair major structural problems since the reserve account is bone dry.

Victor Salcana and his wife saved to purchase in Colina Condominium Complex in South San Francisco. She’s joined the board hoping to become a miracle worker and keep all 144 unit owners from having to write these checks…or go into foreclosure, if they don’t.

Richard Munson, President of the California Association of Homeowners Associations says, “Mismanagement of HOAs is widespread.”  And since boards are generally lay people and property managers aren’t required to be licensed it’s the blind leading the blind.  Who couldn’t have guessed that?

Once again, listen to the adage…the best day in an HOA is the day you move out!
