Please Don’t Leave Me!!!

Dear Friends: I really don’t won’t to lose any of my regular readers. But it would be irresponsible of me to find a great HOA website and not let you know about it. This is a good one for you to mark and check in with regularly:

Newly-elected HOA President Exercises Power…Off To The Court House They Go!

guest blog by Nila Ridings

Kenneth Torrence is a Palm Beach sheriff’s deputy. His best friend is his mixed breed dog, Sasha. But they both have the misfortune of living in the Whispering Woods of Palm Beach Homeowners Association. Kenneth and Sasha have lived there for two years with no problems.

Suddenly, a newly elected HOA president, Maria O’Connell, says Sasha is a pit bull and has to go. In fact, a  letter sent by Castle Management LLC says, “If you do not take action to resolve this violation within (10) days of the date of this letter, the Association will have the work performed, with all costs charged to your account.”

What are they planning???  To steal his dog?  Put her in the animal shelter? Euthanize her?

Animal activist Maria Rivera says Sasha isn’t a pit bull. In fact, a DNA test showed she’s a mix of five breeds. Besides, Rivera says, other neighbors and their dogs like Sasha. The only one who doesn’t is Maria O’Connell.

Torrence says he’ll take it to court. Initial legal costs will be around $30,000.  But just wait and see what happens when the HOA pulls in its insurance-backed legal team to beat up on the deputy.  That 30,000 will be nothing more than seed money.

I say, Kenneth, pack up Sasha and move!  Make a donation to the local animal shelter instead of paying for another vacation home for the HOA attorney!

I Nearly Died Laughing!!!

Oh, my sides still hurt from the hilarity. Linked below you’ll see a very short and amazingly insightful video from an HOA critic who is, as yet, unknown. If I can learn his identity I intend to send that person an autographed copy of my book to show my appreciation.

This fellow obviously lives in an HOA, obviously has been hassled over his holiday decorations, and obviously keeps up with current news events.

And if one of you can figure out who this fellow is, I’ll also send you a book autographed to whoever you want, a neighbor, a Congressman, an HOA board member.

As a matter of fact, we need to keep the humor going. Anyone who sends me a photo or piece of video that needs to be circulated to followers of my website, please feel free to do so. If I end up using your video, you’ll also get a free copy of Neighbors At War in the mail!

Goats Going Great Guns on HOA Grass!

Egads, the stories we’ve done on doggie DNA!

Many HOA neighborhoods are demanding that all dogs in the neighborhood have their cheeks swabbed for DNA. That way, if an uninvited poop is deposited on the board president’s lawn, he can send it to the lab and then have the dog owner nailed with a fine, lawsuit and foreclosure because of the ‘errant doodle doo doo.’

In the meantime, the Japanese (clever people, huh?) are hiring herds of goats to do the mowing in their Homeowners Associations. I’ve long advocated using goats for lawn mowers. The City of Denver has done it successfully for years. Herds of goats are efficient common area grass munchers. And their methane isn’t nearly as awful as the gas fumes put out by gasoline powered mowers.

Ah yes, and goats are far more cuddly than your run-of-the-mill Briggs and Stratton.

More power (bad pun) to the Japanese!

YEAH! HUD vs. Las Vegas HOA!

guest blog by Nila Ridings

Life is very different for those who have a severe handicap or live with someone who does. Social events are rarely, if ever, attended.  Most outings are spent at a medical office or hospital.  Transportation is restricted to a specialized vehicle that comes with a hefty price tag.  And vacations are nearly out of the question.

Above all, these families deserve compassion and kindness.  But all too often, life in an HOA shows us how cold-hearted, selfish, and ridiculous some people can be towards others.

At nineteen years old Eric Doyle has suffered 500 bone fractures due to a disease over which he has no control.  He can’t go out dancing or downhill skiing like others his age. But because his parents purchased an ambulance for his transportation he can occasionally go to the movie theater or to a BBQ dinner.

But Eric and his family had to go through a nightmare of threatening letters, fines, and a battle with the Harbor Cove Homeowners Association in Las Vegas and their First Columbia Community Management, Inc. property manager.  Listen to this!  They demanded he re-paint the ambulance and remove the lights because that’s what THEY wanted in order to keep their perfect little HOA in pristine condition.  You know, so the property values don’t go down. HA!

Harbor Cove Homeowners, welcome to decreased property values with your $65,000 settlement to Eric Doyle and all the media exposure that comes with it!  Keep your noses in the air and your hearts on dry ice.  But never forget the day could come when life isn’t perfect for you either!

Kick ’em harder must be the motto in the HOA and property management rule book when they know somebody can’t stand up and fight back! And threaten them with fines, liens, and lawsuits until you bankrupt them or run them out through your golden gates.

Readers, we must never stop fighting against these injustices!  We are better people with bigger hearts than to let others be hurt like this.

The Doyle family has now moved to a non-HOA community with the $65,000 check in their hand. I wish them the very best in their HOA-free life!
