Dear Lord, I ask myself each night, can it really get worse? Can American homeowners really live under a burgeoning Nazi dictatorship? And the tragic answer is, “Yes, they can.” Nazi, Fascist, Communist, you name it, Americans are stupid enough to fall for it.

Windemere Cay Homeowners Association in central Florida has an interesting rule. If a homeowner writes a negative online review about this fascist organization, they are automatically fined 10,000 bucks! Payable within ten days, no less?

And the owner of the complex is instantly awarded all copyrights on any comments or photographs involving Windemere Cay.

Sometimes, on long lonely nights, I just slap myself silly over the claptrap that’s being issued by the country’s HOA Nazis. Yes, I slap myself. But the nightmare still doesn’t go away.

Where have I been? As a reporter, I think I’m pretty streetwise. I know the controversies involving private prisons. But private debtor prisons? That’s beyond belief and I can hardly believe the judicial system has not taken aggressive action against these outrageous prisons. As you watch this short documentary imagine if HOAs could gain the power to create private prisons!

I thought Brits were supposed to be more polite than Americans. At least the Brits think they are. But Homeowner Associations are endemic around the world. And nasty neighbors can be found anywhere.

But here’s a great nomination for the Neighbors from Hell category from LA Times columnist Donie Vanitzian. It involves a neighborhood battle that’s been going on for forty years in a borough in Tyne and Wear in the northeast corner of England. 89 year old John Bushell has been jailed and fined multiple times over the years because of the unbelievable harassment of his neighbors. Bushell spends a lot of time perfecting his house and garden. But he thinks his neighbors don’t keep up their homes to his standards.

Bushell has diverted his gutters to flood his neighbors’ yards. He has painted the walls facing his neighbors black. He has threatened multiple times to shoot his neighbors and burn down their homes.

Forty years this has been going on! Crazy.

Being a customer of Comcast is mandated in Homeowners Associations across America. HOA boards and managers make backroom deals to allow only one company to service customers. Setting up a monopoly with utiltities supposedly saves money for homeowners. But money isn’t as big a problem as the quality of service.

Obviously, not all customers are satisfied with Comcast customer service. But for the second time in two weeks we hear of the ‘special’ way some customers are treated by the company’s billing department.

I’d love to call this one a scam, but there isn’t enough information to make that kind of allegation. It’s just too bizarre. The City of McAllen, Texas, charges each resident an extra ten bucks on their water bill, supposedly collected on behalf of Homeowners Associations. Theoretically, that money is supposed to go to HOAs for maintenance. But nobody seems to be getting the maintenance or the money, and the City of McAllen has no idea where the money is going. There’s never been an audit. Money is even being collected from homeowners who live in neighborhoods where the HOA has been dissolved. We may be talking about millions of dollars, here.
