Very Personal… On Easter

In the past I’ve told my friends on this website about the sacrifices my dad made fighting with the 3rd Armored Division in France and Germany. And I’ve told you that I have five family members buried in Arlington. But I’ve never told you the following story because I didn’t know it until three weeks ago.

My dad was commanding one of General George Patton’s tank battalions in the last months of World War II when a German soldier fired a bazooka from the upper floor of a chalet in the town of Kaiserslautern, Germany. Dad, who had massive head wounds and extensive brain damage, was taken by the Nazis as a prisoner of war. How he got out is a story for another day. But he survived and after a long battle with Alzheimer’s he died in 1997. The basic facts are in his seventy year-old military and medical records.

Just a few weeks ago a close friend discovered that many graves in Arlington have their own websites. I never knew that! But it gets stranger, still. On my dad’s website is a poem posted by my younger brother several years ago. On this Easter Sunday I would be an irresponsible son and a horrible brother if I neglected to re-post it for you.

                               PASSPORT

Dedicated to LTC Edward D. Lucas, Jr.  1915-1997

Daddy was a soldier in 1942,

A quiet man who never told of all that he went through.

But this fading soldier was dying in his bed,

While memories and battle wounds made war inside his head.

“A stamp is all I need. A stamp is all I need.”

His circuit board had failed him. He prattled as he went.

We heard his words but no one understood just what he meant.

“A stamp is all I need. A stamp is all I need.”

Now some think there’s a Heaven for heroes who pass on,

Who give their lives for God and country until God calls them home.

But Daddy seemed to know that he’d never get that far,

Until Somebody put the perfect stamp upon his heart.

“A stamp is all I need. A stamp is all I need.”

It was January when it was time to die.

They knew my Dad would pass that night,

But I could say, “Goodbye.”

His eyes were glazed and fixed upon the passport by his bed.

And finally I understood the countless times he said,

“A stamp is all I need. A stamp is all I need.”

As his light was fading, and I looked into his face,

Some mysterious visitor had stamped his passport with Grace.

Guts in California, No Guts in Florida

If an award could ever be given to the most irresponsible organization in America, top consideration would have to go to CAI, the Community Associations Institute. The institute has essentially clawed its way to the top of the political food chain, deceiving thousands of Legislators and millions of homeowners into believing it’s a benign organization meant to benefit homeowners. In reality, it’s a massively wealthy parasitic lobbying industry which is sucking the lifeblood out of 335,000 American neighborhoods. CAI is no friend of homeowners. But it, along with other huge lawyer referral agencies like Senator John Carona’s Associa, are throwing billions of dollars into the fight to keep legal control of the HOA racket.

In California, a state which is facing an epic drought and the stark reality of looming food shortages, the simians at CAI have tried to argue that the Legislature has no business ordering homeowners to obey emergency drought restrictions. No, those HOA homes have lush green lawns while the state’s Central Valley is no longer able to supply the food needs of the nation.

Thank God that there’s a God. Because the California Assembly has overwhelmingly voted to ignore the ranting of the CAI primates.

Things are much more difficult in Florida, where it appears the attempt to reign in the horrible abuses of homeowners has again been quashed in the Legislature.

On second thought, maybe critics like me should begin to admire the sledgehammer lobbying tactics of the HOA industry. After all, it takes some talent to disembowel and skin an animal after a deer hunt. Those chops aren’t learned easily.

Maybe the Problem ISN’T Guns!!!

Glory me! Yes, HOA board members and managers are all jittery in Illinois because the courts have upheld the validity of the Second Amendment. Somehow, in their warped way of thinking the CAI (Community Association of Idiots) have figured out that by having a strong Second Amendment and conceal/carry laws, there might be more assaults and threats against HOA board members!

In fact, the CAI recently commissioned a study which ‘proved’ that 13% of board members, managers or homeowners had been physically assaulted and that 52% had been threatened with assault. It’s linked below for those of you curious enough, or bored enough, to want to read further.

Now folks, please understand that I’m a lifelong investigative reporter. I’ve traipsed through slums and I’ve plunked myself down on sofas in Governors’ mansions. I’ve shaken hands with murderers in jail cells and the highest officials in the White House. And you’ll just have to believe me when I say these numbers (13% and 52%) are as crooked as a dog’s hind leg. I could walk into any inner city neighborhood and not find that 52% of the population has been threatened with bodily harm. Unless the CAI produces their survey, I call “fake!”

If such a huge huge number of people are being assaulted or threatened, then it cannot be the people…it has to be the atmosphere. Create a village where all members are supposed to spy on and report the ‘illegal’ activities of neighbors and I might believe a large percentage of people are willing to use physical violence against the Village Idiots.

In the meantime, DO NOT believe the lies perpetrated by the Homeowners Association industry.

Just don’t.

Flight Safety Instructions???

Nine million YouTube hits in three days! Wow!

The Australian cast of The Lion King boarded a flight to Sydney and let fellow passengers get a real taste of flying. Yes, we all value the flight attendents and pilots who get us safely to our destinations. But on this flight it wasn’t the safety briefing that got all the attention!

HOA Crap vs Hanging Crappers?

guest blog by Nila Ridings

If the CAI sees this video they will hang their hat on this being a justifiable reason for the existence of HOAs!  Yes, HOAs would prohibit this from happening for sure.  But is putting up with the crap from the HOA better or worse than this?

Is this revenge for a newly-erected fence?  Or is it an eye for “art” that includes a tree “monument” to honor Sir Thomas Crapper?  He’s famous for… well, he’s just famous.

After living in an HOA, I could find the humor in this if it meant I was living HOA-free.  I’d even buy the first 100lb. bag of bird feed.

But something tells me the city codes enforcement agent will be out soon to write a violation for some kind of hazard.

Under any condition will these neighbors ever be able to live in peace and harmony?
